The first step to a successful EMV migration is to define key strategic decisions that will drive the development and execution of your card program:
- Confirm processor readiness.
- Define cardholder segmentation.
- Determine if your institution will launch with a pilot program or mass reissue.
- Map out plan for mass reissue.
Timing: Weeks 1–2*
Based on your business strategy and processor support, CPI will work with you to determine:
- Chip selection.
- EMV profile.
Timing: Week 3*
Because the EMV chip is physically embedded in the face of your card, it may impact your card’s artwork. CPI’s graphic design team is available to assist with necessary changes to accommodate the chip in your design.
Timing: Weeks 3–12*
Key management is a critical step in the EMV migration process. CPI will support the key management of your project with secure and compliant key generation, key transfer and key validation.
Timing: Weeks 4–10*
At this point in the process, your job is done. CPI takes care of everything else, starting with data prep and profile programming.
Timing: Weeks 6–8*
CPI will work with processors and payment brands on testing and certifying your cards in preparation to launch your program.

Card program goes LIVE! An average EMV migration project is 10–12 weeks.
